What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern Japanese Budo (Martial Way). The founder of Aikido was Ueshiba Morihei, who aikidoka refer to as "O Sensei" (which means "Great teacher"). He died only in 1969. After studying many different martial arts, O Sensei created Aikido. It differs from other Budo (such as Karate-Do or Judo) because its goals are different. Rather than practicing to achieve fighting prowess, Aikidoka develop a strong body and a mind that is calm, free from contentious thoughts, and whose natural reaction is defense rather than offense, protection rather than counter-destruction.

Aikido relies on timing and body-movement, rather than weight and body-strength to achieve its effectiveness. Thus, it may be safely practiced by young and old, male and female.
